Citing increase demand, Amtrak recently said it will add more seats on the Auto Train this summer.
The railroad is adding up to 60 more coach seats on the southbound Train No. 53 and the northbound Train No. 52.
The Auto Train, which travels between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla., carries roughly 600 passengers. The Auto Train carried 265,274 passengers in Fiscal Year 2013, a 0.4 percent increase over the 264,096 passengers carried in 2012, according to Amtrak numbers.
“The Auto Train is the most enjoyable way to travel between the Northeast and Florida while passengers relax and enjoy the scenery,” Amtrak Chief Marketing and Sales Officer Matt Hardison said in a statement. “This service continues to grow in popularity and Amtrak is responding with more seats.”
In Fiscal Year 2013, Amtrak reported $73.5 million in ticket revenue. That represents a 1.4 percent increase over the $72.5 million in ticket revenue the train brought in during Fiscal Year 2012, according to numbers from Amtrak.
The Auto Train’s terminal in Florida is Amtrak’s busiest station in The Sunshine State.
