Indian railway electrical systems manufacturer Hirect will debut a new 6,000-horsepower electric locomotive propulsion system at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, which runs from Sept. 22 to Sept. 25.
The company also plans to announce its first development order for a complete trainset propulsion system for Indian Railways’ next-generation Mainline Electric Multiple Unit fleet.
Hirect said its 6,000-horsepower propulsion system completed its acceptance program after successfully hauling loaded freight in a WAG-9 locomotive under demanding operating and thermal conditions in India.
The system was designed, engineered and manufactured in-house and includes liquid-cooled insulated-gate bipolar transistor traction inverters and converters, along with proprietary control software.
Hirect has worked with Indian Railways for nearly seven decades, initially as a supplier of traction transformers and later expanding into power electronics, auxiliary power supplies, silicon carbide battery chargers, traction motors and HVAC systems.
The company also secured a development order from Modern Coach Factory, Indian Railways, for complete propulsion systems for four Mainline Electric Multiple Unit trainsets.
The 24-month program includes traction transformers, traction motors and a fully integrated propulsion system, including the Train Control and Management System.
