The engineer of the Amtrak that derailed in Philadelphia a year ago lost “situational awareness” after he diverted his attention to an emergency involving another train, the National Transportation Safety Board said this week.
Amtrak’s next president should he necessary vision and management skills to successfully implement new reforms and improve Amtrak’s performance, a pair of Republicans on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said in a letter to the railroad’s Board.
Amtrak launched operations in 1971. At first the locomotive used coaches and motive power it acquired from various railroads that were leaving the passenger railroad business to government-created Amtrak.
