Rogers, Ketchum & Grosvenor of Patterson, New Jersey, built The General for $8,850. It entered service on the Western & Atlantic Railroad in January 1856.
The Velvet was a high-speed passenger service inaugurated on June 5, 1893, by the Western & Atlantic Railroad in conjunction with the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway.
