Overview
After nearly two years of construction, the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway opened a new tunnel at Tunnel Hill, Georgia, replacing the Western & Atlantic Railroad’s original tunnel, which had opened on May 9, 1850.
Built at a cost of approximately $500,000, the new bore, a major modernization of the state-owned railroad through Chetoogeta Mountain, was designed to accommodate the larger locomotives and rail cars of the modern railroad era that could no longer efficiently use the older tunnel. State and local officials traveled by special train to attend the dedication ceremony. The first complete train to pass through the tunnel stretched 1,513 feet, demonstrating the route’s expanded capacity.
