Overview
Building the railroad required several remarkable engineering feats, including the roughly 360-foot-long and 175-foot-deep Allatoona Pass south of Cartersville. Workers carved the pass by hand during the 1840s. Trains ran through the pass for about a century until the line was rerouted during the 1940s.
