CSX Transportation’s newly painted Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad heritage unit passes through Smyrna, Georgia, on the historic Western & Atlantic Railroad in June 2024.

The P&LE Railroad dates to 1875. According to CSX, it is the 15th unit in the company’s heritage locomotive series. Others include the Georgia Railroad, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

“Its mainline connected Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with Youngstown, Ohio and Connellsville, Pennsylvania. It did not actually reach Lake Erie until 1976,” Tim Music, a carman painter at the CSX Waycross Locomotive Shop where the unit was produced, said on the company’s website.
