RAIB Opens Probe into Fatality at Chestnut Grove Pedestrian Crossing

The United Kingdom’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation after a young person was struck and killed by a train at the Chestnut Grove footpath crossing between Lowdham and Burton Joyce stations on Nov. 26 in Nottinghamshire.

The mishap occurred at about 7:05 p.m., when a train traveling around 60 mph struck the pedestrian on the pedestrian-only crossing, which links the village to paths leading to the River Trent. The crossing is gated on both sides and includes signage instructing pedestrians how to traverse the line, RAIB said.

Investigators will examine the sequence of events leading to the accident and assess factors that may have influenced the decisions and actions of those involved. The scope will include any previous incidents at Chestnut Grove, the management of risk at the location — covering coordination between Network Rail, local government and other organizations — and Network Rail’s wider strategy for assessing and mitigating risks at footpath crossings.

RAIB emphasized the inquiry is independent of investigations by the rail industry or the Office of Rail and Road. Findings, including any safety recommendations, will be published at the conclusion of the inquiry on RAIB’s website.

Chestnut Grove footpath crossing provides pedestrian access between Burton Joyce and riverside routes, a popular link for local residents. Officials did not immediately release further details about the victim.
