North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Welcome Visiting Steam Locomotives During September Steam Gala

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway will welcome three visiting steam locomotives for its four-day Annual Steam Gala from Sept. 24-27, including LNER A4 Pacific No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and GWR Castle Class No. 4079 Pendennis Castle.

No. 60007 returns to the heritage railway as part of events marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of locomotive designer Sir Nigel Gresley. Built at Doncaster Works, the locomotive entered service in 1937 as No. 4498 and was the 100th Gresley Pacific constructed for the London and North Eastern Railway.

Pendennis Castle, visiting from the Didcot Railway Centre, will make its first appearance at the NYMR. Built in 1924, the locomotive gained prominence during 1925 trials against Gresley’s Pacific locomotives before appearing alongside Flying Scotsman at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley.

The third guest, London and South Western Railway T3 No. 563, will visit courtesy of the Swanage Railway Trust. Built in 1893 to a design by William Adams, No. 563 returned to passenger service in October 2023 following a six-year restoration. It had not hauled a passenger train since 1945.

The NYMR’s home fleet scheduled to participate includes Black 5 Nos. 44806 and 5428 Eric Treacy, 9F No. 92134, Schools Class No. 926 Repton, Lambton Tank No. 29 Peggy, Cockerill No. 8 Lucie, NER Class P3 No. 2392 and No. 2253 Omaha. The latter has recently been converted to burn oil.

A full timetable is planned across the heritage railway, with morning and return shuttle services between Whitby and Grosmont. The event will also include the railway’s annual beer festival and a barbecue at Grosmont.

The railway is also planning separate pre-booked services featuring Sir Nigel Gresley and Pendennis Castle during September and October.
