At least 30 people were killed today, Wednesday, Oct. 28, when two high-speed trains collided in central Spain’s Toledo province, according to initial reports.
The collision occurred near Urda and Los Yébenes in the Castilla-La Mancha region when, according to reports, one train struck the rear of another that had stopped on the tracks. An estimated 500 passengers were aboard the two trains, which were traveling between Madrid and Seville.
The impact caused several railcars to derail, with some plunging down an embankment. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as emergency crews continued rescue and recovery operations.
Emergency services and local governments mobilized assistance for survivors and injured passengers, including preparing a local sports hall to accommodate those affected. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the collision and said he was in contact with transportation officials.
