Amtrak sees ridership increase in FY 2014

The number of people who took Amtrak in Fiscal Year 2014 increased 0.2 percent from a year earlier while ticket revenues increased 4 percent, the railroad said. “Amtrak is clearly selling a product that is very much in demand,” Amtrak Board Chairman Tony Coscia said in a news release. “Achieving strong ridership and revenue despite the challenges with aging infrastructure and freight rail congestion demonstrates Amtrak’s commitment to improving its financial and operating performance, and is a credit to Amtrak’s management and staff. Amtrak to Celebrate National Train Day on May 10

Amtrak will celebrate the seventh annual National Train Day on May 10, the railroad said. In addition to events in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles, Amtrak is supporting events in many local markets across the country served by Amtrak. Event offerings include train equipment displays, family-friendly activities and local dignitaries.

Amtrak wants 16 percent more in federal funding for FY2015

Amtrak wants federal taxpayers to pony up 16 percent more in funding for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2015, according to a new request from the railroad. For the fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1, the railroad is asking for $1.62 billion in federal support. Amtrak received approximately $1.4 billion from in federal funds for the current fiscal year.
