Belair Road Station

Belair Road was a station on the former Staten Island Railway’s South Beach Branch. It opened in March 1886.

It featured two side platforms and tracks at Vermont Avenue between Belair Road and St. Johns Avenue. The station primarily served the U.S. Quarantine Station, which was located one block to the east.

Originally constructed of wood, the Belair Road station was designed to accommodate only two-car trains. It included a shelter on one of the platforms.

In 1936, the station was reconstructed using concrete and was improved with underground access walkways on both sides.

North of the station, a trestle was built at St. Johns Avenue in 1936 to allow the road to pass over the railway right-of-way. Today, only a stanchion from the trestle remains.

The station was ultimately abandoned when the Staten Island Railway discontinued passenger service on the South Beach Branch to Wentworth Avenue at midnight on March 31, 1953, amid increased competition from city-operated bus services.
