Overview
Constructed about 1850 for Georgia’s state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad, the Ringgold Depot is one of the state’s few surviving antebellum railroad depots. Built of native sandstone, the depot served the growing town of Ringgold. Contractor Garrett V. Maegeram supervised the stone masonry, and the depot was in service by early 1850 as the railroad neared completion.
During the Civil War, the depot played an important role in military transportation and witnessed events associated with the Great Locomotive Chase, the Chickamauga Campaign, and the Battle of Ringgold Gap. Unlike many railroad structures destroyed during the war, the stone depot survived, though it sustained damage that later required repairs.
