(Railfanning.org News Wire) — Britain’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch plans to issue a safety digest following an Oct. 15 buffer stop collision involving an empty passenger train at London’s Liverpool Street station.
The mishap occurred at about 12:58 a.m. at Platform 1 when the out-of-service train struck the terminal buffer stop while traveling at roughly 7 mph. The impact derailed the first three cars and caused structural damage to both the rolling stock and the station buffer assembly. Emergency responders transported the driver to a local hospital for evaluation, though RAIB confirmed no physical injuries were sustained.
After a preliminary examination at the scene, RAIB investigators determined that issuing a concise safety digest — rather than opening a comprehensive full-scale investigation report — was appropriate based on the initial physical evidence gathered.
While RAIB has not yet formally cited a cause for the low-speed derailment, the safety digest detailing preliminary findings and operational lessons will be published in the coming weeks.
