RAIB to Issue Safety Digest After Train Strikes Equipment Left on London Track

LONDON — Rail investigators will publish a safety digest after a passenger train struck two rail handling trolleys that had been left on the track following overnight engineering work at Queens Park.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch said the collision happened at about 5:35 a.m. on May 9, when the passenger train, traveling at 77 mph, hit the trolleys.

No passengers or staff were injured, RAIB said. The train did not derail, but it was damaged and could not continue in service. The two trolleys were damaged beyond economic repair.

RAIB said it conducted a preliminary examination of the circumstances and, after assessing the evidence gathered so far, decided to publish a safety digest rather than a full investigation report.

The digest, expected in the next few weeks, will outline the safety issues identified from the incident.
