(Railfanning.org News Wire) — New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission is investigating after a heritage train struck and killed a person at Te Awamutu railway station.
The incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, when a Glenbrook Vintage Railway train struck a person at the station, according to preliminary information released by the commission.
Waikato Police are conducting a separate investigation and have asked witnesses to come forward.
Police said several people were in the area at the time and are particularly interested in photographs or video that could assist investigators.
Authorities are also supporting the victim’s family and have encouraged people who witnessed the incident and need assistance to contact Victim Support.
Police have not released the identity of the person killed or additional details about the circumstances leading to the collision.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission’s inquiry will examine the circumstances and causes of the accident.
