(Railfanning.org News Wire) — One person died Sunday evening in an incident involving a train at Te Awamutu railway station in New Zealand’s Waikato region, police say. Emergency services were called about 6:20 p.m., and the person died at the scene, according to Senior Sergeant John McCarthy.
Police have not released the person’s identity or further details about what happened. They said they are supporting the person’s whānau, or extended family, along with the bystanders who tried to help before emergency crews arrived.
Te Awamutu sits on the North Island Main Trunk, the country’s main freight and passenger corridor linking Auckland and Wellington through the Waikato. Passenger trains stopped calling at the station in 2005, though KiwiRail still owns the platform and the line remains active for freight and other through traffic.
McCarthy called it a tragic incident and asked anyone who witnessed what happened to contact police if they haven’t already. The Serious Crash Unit has completed a scene examination, and inquiries are ongoing.
